The 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion objectives:

Recognition: recognise the fundamental right of persons experiencing poverty and social exclusion to live in dignity and to take an active part in society;
Shared responsibility and participation: promote public support for social inclusion policies, emphasising collective and individual responsibility in combating poverty and social exclusion, and fostering commitment by all public and private actors;
Cohesion: promote a more cohesive society, where no one doubts that society as a whole benefits from the eradication of poverty
Commitment and practical action: renew the pledge of the EU and its Member States to combat poverty and social exclusion, and involve all levels of authority in the pursuit of that aim.

Organised by the European Commission and the Spanish Presidency, the conference will aim to:

Deepening the understanding of the principal problems of poverty and social exclusion evidenced over the past few years in the joint inclusion reports, studies, etc
Sending a clear political and social message on the need to correct inequalities in Europe and to place the fight against poverty at the centre of the agenda
Proposing long term objectives for the fight against poverty and social exclusion in the future 2020 EU Strategy
Encouraging stakeholders and relevant actors to take initiatives within the framework of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion

Established for the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion, a group of regional offices representing  a variety of local and regional interests have banded together to form a regional working group tasked with organising events and supporting the policy debate on the major themes of the year.

European Conference: Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion with Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights in Adult Learning04-05/03/2010, Glasgow, England

This conference aims at bringing together ~ 100 European Educators from the field of non formal adult education in order to exchange educational knowledge and share practice in civic and human rights educational work for social excluded/disadvantaged people from various European countries. DARE - the European network for democracy and human rights education - will use the opportunity of the European Year for combating Poverty and Social Exclusion to raise awareness among adult educators from all over Europe for the educational tasks connected to tackle poverty and social exclusion as well as communicate the work and needs being done in this section of non formal adult education towards the level of the European Union. The conference is also the starting point for various NGO activities in Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights all over Europe.
