MOBILITY: The context...

Mobility is the ability of an individual to move and adapt to a new occupational environment. Mobility can be ´geographical´ or ‘functional’ and can be seen from a learning perspective or from a labour perspective.

Mobility can be an instrument to address existing skill or labour market shortages and skills mismatches in a country or region. Having the right skills and adequate education it can help an individual to move quickly from school into a job, to climb the career ladder, or to find a new job.

Besides, mobility expands and enriches the training and experience of young people, enhancing their employability and developing their intercultural understanding through language skills and exposure to other cultures.

This calls for a reflection of internationalisation and globalisation of Vocational training and labour market! Training providers have to change from ‘traditional schools’, to ‘knowledge centres’ that engage directly with enterprises, that can deliver tailored training pathways.

Transparency: a prerequisite for mobility !

Mobility can only be seen as a succes when we are able to recognize and validate the learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences) which are acquired in this other context. Mutual trust in other VET systems, assessment and validation procedures (quality assurance!) and transparency in learning outcomes when making mobility a reality in Europe. EQF, ECVET and EQAVET are part of a set of initiatives of the European Commission to promote transparency, LLL and mobility in Europe.
